31 March - 6 April 2019Bukubaki Ecolodge, Portugal

Digital & Detox - an adventure of a lifetime

Code Excursion is a Swiss - Swedish initiative to get women from any background interested in programming. You will spend about 25 hours learning about tech, but also have time for yourself, go surfing and practice yoga. We are going to the absolutely stunning Bukubaki Ecolodge located one hour North of Lisbon. You will learn the language and tools you need to feel confident talking about tech topics with developers. To reach that goal you will be taught how the internet, databases and servers work and besides that dive into Front-End Programming with HTML, CSS and JavaScript.  You sleep in treehouses, enjoy local food and amazing nature. We aim to make this week a joyful, enlightening and memorable one!

  • More than 25 hours of hands-on learning , in small teams
  • Learn from experienced developers
  • Create a final project
  • Enjoy delicious local food
  • Sleep in beautiful tree houses
  • Everyday yoga lessons
  • Possibility to book surfing and skating lessons  with experienced, local teachers
  • The participants are all female

      Software Engineer

Hey, I am Jahlela! I am originally from California, and lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for 7 years before moving to Zurich, where I now work as a software engineer. I caught the programming bug a few years ago, after getting my degree in Cognitive Neuroscience, working as a product manager, and founding several startups. I remember the whirlwind of information and technical jargon seemed impossibly complex. Several years later, I now have experience in not just Python, JavaScript, React, web apps, databases, but am also well-versed in developing products, technical collaboration, and integration of design. I'm excited to help everyone at the camp learn more about the tech ecosystem.

On the personal side, I love being outdoors, traveling, and meeting new people. I am so happy to be able to shed some light on tech topics and join you in this wonderful learning setting.

I am so happy to be organising this adventure for you and to be joining you in Portugal! This week will be packed with what I love: Inspire others to learn programming, be active outdoors and joyful people. As a former tourism student, travel agent and now, thanks to Code Excursion, junior front end developer this week is a dream come true.

I have experienced myself that a theoretical approach to learning new things can be very frustrating, inefficient and overcomplicated - especially in programming. This is why I am so confident that the combination of hands-on coding, sports in an amazing environment and down-to-earth teachers, will make all the difference for a great learning experience. I can't wait to go on this trip with you!
